Where ductless fits, and what it costs here
Many beach bungalows were built without ducts. For those homes a ductless system avoids opening finished walls. For a single-zone ductless install, a typical Malibu job runs between $3,200 and $5,400 depending on line-set length and mounting complexity. Multi-zone ductless systems for three or four rooms fall between $10,500 and $21,500.
A central ducted system is a different quote, written after the visit.
Permits, code and equipment
Replacing an AC in Malibu is permitted work, and the permit comes from the City of Malibu building and safety division. Title 24 Part 6 can require duct sealing and a duct leakage test checked by a HERS rater who is not the installer. We plan that into the schedule, and the permit and testing lines appear in your written quote before work starts. New split systems are built with A2L refrigerants such as R-454B or R-32.
Southern California Edison supplies power in Malibu. Some canyon homes have no gas main and run on propane, which matters if the same house is also getting a furnace.
