Permits and gas safety in Malibu
Replacing a furnace or heat pump in California is permitted work. In Malibu the permit is issued by the City of Malibu building and safety division. On a change-out or duct work, Title 24 Part 6 can require duct sealing and a duct leakage test, verified by a HERS rater who is not the installer.
Southern California Edison supplies electric service in Malibu. Natural gas, where a main exists, comes from SoCalGas, and some Malibu and canyon homes run on propane instead. California law requires carbon monoxide alarms in homes with a fuel-burning appliance, so a furnace job is also the time to check them.
The permit, the venting and any testing are written into the quote, so you see the full scope before the crew arrives.
