Ductless mini split installation in Malibu starts with a site visit and ends with a written quote you can compare line by line. If your house has no ducts, no attic space or a guest unit that never got air, one outdoor unit and a small indoor head per room gives you cooling and heating without opening a wall. This page shows what the install costs and what decides your number.
Ductless mini split installation in Malibu
Malibu AirCon Services plans each install around the house in front of us. A beach cottage on a narrow lot, a hillside guest house and a converted garage are three different jobs, even when each one asks for a single head.
Here is what the job covers:
- A room-by-room load calculation to size each indoor head.
- The outdoor unit, the indoor heads, the line sets and the condensate drains.
- A dedicated electrical circuit and a disconnect at the outdoor unit.
- The permit, the inspection and a startup with you present.
You can read the equipment details on our ductless mini split page. Want to replace a tired furnace as well? Start with heating installation.
What it costs
A typical single-zone install in Malibu runs between $3,200 and $5,400 depending on line-set length and mounting complexity. Multi-zone systems for three or four rooms fall between $10,500 and $21,500.
The span is wide because the houses are. Your number moves with:
| What changes | Why it moves the price |
|---|---|
| Number of zones | Each room served adds an indoor head and its own line set. |
| Line-set length | A longer run from the outdoor unit to the head means more material and more labor. |
| Mounting | A pad, a wall bracket or a roof stand each take different work. |
| Electrical | An older panel may need a new circuit or an upgrade before the system can run. |
| Equipment | Capacity and coastal-rated options change the equipment line. |
The quote is written before work starts and lists each of these as its own line. If you want a one-zone price and a multi-zone price side by side, ask and we will write both.
Outdoor unit placement, salt air and line set runs
The outdoor unit takes the weather, so where it sits matters. Salt carried off the water settles on the coil and the cabinet. A spot with clear airflow, shelter from the heaviest wind and room for a technician to reach the coil gives the unit room to work.
We settle three things at the survey:
- Pad or bracket. The unit stays off the ground and out of sprinkler spray.
- Coastal-rated equipment. A coated coil and a corrosion-resistant cabinet suit a lot near the sand. We note it on the quote.
- Line set route. The refrigerant lines run through one small opening in the wall. We choose a route that keeps them short, wrapped and out of sight where we can.
Gated streets and HOA rules can limit where a condenser goes. We check them before the pad is poured, because moving a unit after the install costs more than placing it right the first time. A coil rinse during an AC maintenance visit keeps salt from building up once the system is running.
Heat in winter from the same system
A ductless mini split is a heat pump. In cooling mode it moves heat out of the room. In heating mode it reverses and brings heat in. That means your ductless AC also heats the rooms it serves, so a house with no furnace gets winter heat from the same equipment.
If your home runs on propane, you may keep the tank for a stove or a water heater and let the mini split carry the space heating. The tank and fuel come from your propane supplier. A heat pump runs on electricity from Southern California Edison, and your panel needs to carry the new load, so we check it early and show it on the quote.
Permit and install day
Adding a mini split in California is permitted work. In Malibu the permit comes from the City of Malibu building and safety division, and an inspection follows the install. We prepare the paperwork and book the inspection.
Depending on the scope, Title 24 Part 6 can come into play. A fully ductless job often avoids duct testing, and the scope decides it. New residential heat pumps now use lower-GWP A2L refrigerants such as R-454B or R-32. The quote names the model and the refrigerant it uses.
On install day, the crew sets the pad or bracket, mounts the heads, runs the line sets, connects power and drains, then pulls a vacuum on the lines and starts the system. You see each head run before we leave. The inspector signs off after that. Many single-zone jobs finish in a day, and a multi-zone job takes longer.
FAQ
How much does a ductless mini split installation cost in Malibu?
A typical single-zone install in Malibu runs between $3,200 and $5,400 depending on line-set length and mounting complexity. Multi-zone systems for three or four rooms fall between $10,500 and $21,500. The written quote comes before any work begins.
What does a mini split installation quote include?
It lists the outdoor unit, each indoor head, the line sets, the electrical work, the permit and the startup. Each item has its own line, so you can compare options without guessing what is bundled.
Can a ductless mini split heat the house too?
Yes. A ductless heat pump cools in summer and heats in winter from the same outdoor unit. Each head can be set to heat or cool for its own room.
How much does mini split installation cost for more than one room?
It depends on how many heads you want and how far each sits from the outdoor unit. Three or four rooms fall between $10,500 and $21,500 in a multi-zone system. Send photos and we will price your layout.
Will salt air damage the outdoor unit?
Salt is hard on any outdoor equipment near the water. Smart placement, coastal-rated equipment and a regular coil rinse all slow the wear. We plan for it at the survey.
Who pulls the permit?
The permit comes from the City of Malibu. We prepare it and schedule the inspection as part of the job.
