Your Malibu house may have a furnace and no cooling, a remodel that has the ceilings open, or an old split system rusting on its pad. Central air conditioning installation puts cooled air through every room from one thermostat. Malibu AirCon Services plans each install for where the house sits: the salt side near Zuma and Point Dume, or the canyon side where the afternoon heat builds.
What a central air install covers in Malibu
A central system has two halves joined by a refrigerant line set. Outside sits a condenser on a pad or a bracket. Inside sits an evaporator coil on the furnace, or a matched air handler, feeding the ducts. Our install scope covers:
- A room-by-room load calculation before any model is picked.
- The condenser, the indoor coil or air handler, and the line set between them.
- A coastal-rated cabinet and a coated coil wherever salt reaches the pad.
- The disconnect, the breaker, the condensate drain and a new thermostat.
- The City of Malibu mechanical permit and the inspection.
- Startup and airflow checks with you in the house.
To start, send the square footage, the heater you have now and a photo of the spot you picture for the outdoor unit through the central air quote form on this page.
What sets the price of your install
We do not publish one central air figure. Malibu houses differ too much for a single number to mean anything. Your quote is written before work starts, and these items move it:
| Item | How it moves the quote |
|---|---|
| House size and cooling load | More capacity means a bigger condenser and coil |
| Existing ducts | Sound ducts keep the cost down; missing or leaking runs add to it |
| Coastal protection | Coated coils and corrosion-resistant cabinets add to the equipment line |
| Pad access | A flat side yard is quick; a bluff deck or a steep slope adds labor |
| Electrical panel | A full panel may need work before the new circuit fits |
| Efficiency tier | Higher SEER2 equipment costs more up front |
Each one shows up as its own line, so you can see what you are paying for and drop an option you do not want.
Placing the condenser on the beach side or the canyon side
Where the outdoor unit sits matters as much as which unit you buy. Near the sand at Point Dume and along Zuma, salt spray settles on the fins and the electrical connections. We set the pad out of the direct wind where the lot allows, specify a coated coil, and keep the line set insulation sealed against moisture.
Inland toward Agoura Hills and up the canyons, the concern flips to heat and distance. A condenser on a sunny slope works harder, and a long run back to the house adds line set and labor. We pick the spot that keeps the run short and the unit shaded where we can.
Gated streets often have HOA rules on where a condenser can go and how it is screened. We check those rules before the pad goes down, so nobody has to move the unit after the inspection.
Reuse, reseal or run new ducts
A new condenser on leaky ducts throws away part of what it was sized to deliver. If your house has ducts, we test them first and price the result in separate lines: seal what holds, resize runs that starve a room, and replace what has torn or collapsed.
A house that never had ducts needs a route through the attic, a crawl space or soffits. That route goes on the quote in plain words, with the rooms it serves. Our ductwork services page covers the duct side. If one room cannot take a duct at all, a ductless head can serve it, and we price both so you choose.
Permit, duct test and install day
Central air is permitted work in California. In Malibu the permit comes from the City of Malibu building and safety division. Depending on the scope, Title 24 Part 6 can require duct sealing and a duct leakage test, verified by a third-party HERS rater who is not the installer. We book the inspection and the rater so the dates line up.
On install day the crew covers floors, sets the pad, mounts the coil or air handler, runs and pressure tests the line set, and wires the disconnect. New split systems are made with lower-GWP A2L refrigerants such as R-454B or R-32, and the system is charged to match. Before we leave, we start it, check airflow at the registers and show you the thermostat. The equipment we fit is on our AC installation page.
FAQ
How much does central air conditioning installation cost in Malibu?
It depends on the house size, the state of the ducts, the coastal protection the pad needs and how hard the pad is to reach. We write the quote after a site visit and before any work starts. Each of those items is its own line.
Can you add central air to a house that only has a furnace?
Often, yes. If the furnace and ducts are in good shape, we add a coil on the furnace and a condenser outside. If the furnace is worn, we price a matched replacement next to the add-on.
Do I need a coastal-rated condenser?
If the pad gets salt spray, we recommend it. A coated coil and a corrosion-resistant cabinet cost more at the start and hold up longer near the water. An inland pad may not need the upgrade, and the quote will say so.
Can my old ducts stay?
Sometimes. We test them before we quote. Sound ducts stay, leaky runs get sealed, and undersized or damaged runs get replaced, each priced on its own.
How long does the install take?
A change-out on sound ducts is quicker than a house getting ducts for the first time. Your quote lists the install days and the inspection date, so you can plan around them.
