New HVAC system cost in Malibu is hard to pin down from a search result, because a house on Point Dume and a canyon house toward Agoura Hills are different jobs. Salt air, tight access and long distances all push the number around. This page explains what a full replacement covers, what moves the price, and how we build a quote you can read line by line.
What a full system replacement includes
A full replacement is more than swapping a box. It usually covers:
- The outdoor unit, whether a condenser or a heat pump.
- The indoor equipment, a furnace or an air handler with a coil.
- Refrigerant lines, drain, electrical connections and a new thermostat.
- Pad or mounting, and any disconnect or breaker work.
- Permit, inspection and startup.
- Haul-away of the old equipment.
Before any of that, a load calculation tells us what size each room needs. Sizing from the old unit alone is how houses end up with a system that is too big, cycles too often and never dries the air properly. Our AC installation page has the rest of the process.
Pricing for the system itself starts from our own figures. A typical single-zone install in Malibu runs between $3,200 and $5,400 depending on line-set length and mounting complexity. Multi-zone systems for three or four rooms fall between $10,500 and $21,500. Those are ranges for the install, and your quote will show where your house sits and why.
What moves the price on the coast: corrosion protection, access, distance, ducts
Four things do most of the moving.
Corrosion protection. Near the water, we specify coastal-rated condensers, coated coils and protected line sets. They cost more at the start and cost less than replacing a rusted unit early.
Access. A cliffside lot, a steep driveway or a roof-only pad can mean a crane, extra labor or a long carry. A flat side yard with a clear path is the cheap end of the range.
Distance. Long runs between the outdoor unit and the indoor equipment add line-set length, refrigerant and labor. This is the reason a ductless job can swing so far in price.
Ducts. Old ductwork that leaks or is undersized can waste what a new system makes. Leaks waste energy you pay for. If your ducts are tired, replacing or sealing them belongs in the quote. See our ductwork services for what that involves.
Other things move it too: the size of the house, the number of zones, the brand and tier of equipment, and whether a panel upgrade is needed.
Gas, propane or heat pump
The fuel you choose changes both the equipment and the long-term bill.
- Gas furnace with AC. Where a gas main exists, SoCalGas is the supplier. Familiar, and a good fit if your house already has the gas line and ducts.
- Propane furnace. Some Malibu and canyon homes have no gas main and run on propane from a tank and a supplier. A replacement keeps the tank and the deliveries.
- Heat pump. One system heats and cools on electricity. In Malibu the electric utility is Southern California Edison. It removes the need for gas or propane for space heating, and the panel has to carry it.
There is no single winner. The right pick depends on what you already have, what your panel can support, and what you want to stop paying for. We price the options side by side so you can compare them. Read more on heating installation.
New residential split AC and heat pump systems now use lower-GWP A2L refrigerants such as R-454B or R-32. If your current system is old, it may be on a refrigerant that is hard to service, and R-22 systems depend on reclaimed supply. That is one more reason a replacement can make sense over another repair.
Permits and inspection in Malibu
Replacing a furnace, heat pump, AC or ductwork in California is permitted work. In Malibu the permit comes from the City of Malibu building and safety division, and an inspection follows the install.
Title 24 Part 6, California's Building Energy Efficiency Standard, can require duct sealing and a duct leakage test depending on the scope. A third-party HERS rater who is not the installer verifies it. That adds a step and sometimes a line on the quote, which is why we tell you about it early.
Efficiency is shown in SEER2 and HSPF2, the current federal ratings. Higher ratings usually cost more up front. We show you the choices and let you decide.
Building the written quote
A good quote lets you compare us to anyone. Ours is written before work starts and breaks the job into plain lines:
- Equipment, with the model named.
- Coastal protection, where it applies.
- Line-set and mounting.
- Duct work, if any.
- Electrical and panel work.
- Permit and inspection.
- Removal of the old system.
If something changes on site, such as a hidden rotted platform, we tell you before we change the price, and you decide. To start, send us your address, the current equipment and a few photos of the outdoor space and the indoor equipment. We use them to write a number that fits your house and not a number that fits every house.
FAQ
How much does a new HVAC system cost in Malibu?
It depends on the house. A typical single-zone install in Malibu runs between $3,200 and $5,400 depending on line-set length and mounting complexity. Multi-zone systems for three or four rooms fall between $10,500 and $21,500.
Why is HVAC more expensive on the coast?
Salt air attacks outdoor equipment, so coastal-rated parts and coil protection are worth adding. Tight access and long line-set runs add labor. Those items show up as lines on the quote.
Should I replace my ducts with the system?
If they leak or were sized for old equipment, usually yes. New equipment on bad ducts wastes much of what it produces. We inspect them and price the repair or replacement separately so you can see the cost.
Is a heat pump cheaper than a gas furnace and AC?
Not always up front. The right choice depends on your current fuel, your electrical panel and your plans for the house. We price both so you can compare.
Do I need a permit to replace my HVAC?
Yes. Replacing a furnace, heat pump, AC or ductwork is permitted work in California. In Malibu the City of Malibu issues it, and we handle the filing.
