Mini Split AC Installation in Malibu: Price and Next Step

A mini split AC installation in Malibu starts with a number you can act on. A single-zone install runs $3,200 to $5,400, and what moves it is the wall, the pad spot and the run between them. If you already know the room, ask for the written quote here and we will start from your house.

What a mini split install costs in Malibu

For a single-zone ductless install, a typical Malibu job runs between $3,200 and $5,400 depending on line-set length and mounting complexity. Multi-zone systems for three or four rooms fall between $10,500 and $21,500. See our AC installation service.

Those are ranges, not a quote. Your number lands inside one of them once we see the wall, the outdoor pad spot and the run between them. The written quote comes before any work starts, and it lists each item so you can compare it against another bid.

Zones, heads and the room-by-room sizing

A mini split puts one indoor head in each zone. One bedroom or a studio is one zone. A main floor with a living room, a kitchen and two bedrooms is three or four. Each head adds equipment, wall work and line-set length, which is why the multi-zone range sits so far above the single-zone one.

We run a room-by-room load calculation before we pick equipment. A glass wall facing the water asks for something different than a shaded bedroom toward the canyon. Sizing from the room you have, not from a guess, is what keeps the head from cycling on and off all afternoon.

If you are cooling an addition, a guest house or a room the main system never reached, a mini split is a clean fit because no ducts are needed. If the whole house needs cooling, we compare mini splits against central air and a heat pump, side by side, and put both in the quote.

Where the outdoor unit and line set go

The outdoor unit is where the coast shows up in the price. Near the sand we specify coastal-rated outdoor units with coated coils and protected line sets. That costs more on day one than a standard unit. It is the part of the job you should not trim.

Placement decides the rest:

  • A short line-set run from the head to the pad keeps the price down.
  • A long run, a second story or a cliffside pad adds labor and sometimes lifting equipment.
  • HOA and coastal placement rules are checked before the pad goes down, so the unit does not get moved after install.
  • Wall mounting on stucco, wood siding or glass-adjacent framing changes the mounting work.

Bring the questions that decide a bid: how far is the wall from the pad, is the unit visible from the street, and does an HOA need to sign off. Each answer changes a line on the quote, so we ask them on the visit and write the result down.

Tell us the street or enclave and we will tell you if access changes the quote. We install across Malibu, Point Dume and out toward Agoura Hills, and a Malibu service area visit covers the whole walk-through in one trip.

Permit and install day

A new mini split in California is permitted work. The City of Malibu's own building and safety division issues it. We book the mechanical permit and the inspection for you, so you are not standing in a counter line.

On install day the crew sets the pad, mounts the heads, runs and seals the line sets, wires the disconnect, evacuates and charges the system, and walks you through the remote. Since 1 Jan 2025, new residential split systems are made with lower-GWP refrigerants such as R-454B or R-32, so the equipment on your quote is built around those.

FAQ

How much does mini split AC installation cost in Malibu?

A single-zone install runs between $3,200 and $5,400. Three or four rooms fall between $10,500 and $21,500. Your written quote sets the exact figure.

Can a mini split replace my central air?

Yes, for some houses. If the ducts are failing or the house has no ducts, a multi-zone mini split can cover the rooms. We write the mini split and the central air options next to each other so you can see both totals.

What goes into a mini split quote?

The equipment, the number of heads, the line-set run, the pad or wall mount, the electrical work, the permit and the inspection. If the job needs a crane or a longer run, that line is on the quote before we start.

Does a mini split also heat?

A ductless heat pump model heats as well as cools from the same head. Say you want heat in the room and we will price that model.

Will salt air hurt the outdoor unit?

Salt is hard on bare metal near the water. That is why homes near the beach get coastal-rated units with coated coils and protected lines, and why it shows on the quote.
