AC Condenser Replacement in Malibu: Swap the Outdoor Unit or the System

If the outdoor unit at your Malibu house has corroded, stopped starting or been written off by another tech, an AC condenser replacement is the job to price. Malibu AirCon Services replaces condensers and full systems on the coast, with equipment chosen for salt air and canyon heat. The price depends on the unit and the coil, so we write it after we see the house.

Send us the details through the quote form and we will tell you whether a condenser swap or a full system is the sounder buy.

What sets the price of a condenser swap

A condenser job is quoted at the visit, in writing, before work starts. What moves the number:

  • The condenser itself: size, and whether it is coastal-rated with a coated coil.
  • The indoor coil: it has to match the new condenser.
  • Refrigerant: new systems use lower-GWP refrigerants such as R-454B or R-32, so old refrigerant does not carry over.
  • The line set: reused if sound, replaced if it is corroded or the wrong size.
  • The pad and the electrical disconnect.
  • Access to the unit, from a ground pad to a bracket on a bluff side.
  • The permit and the inspection.

The quote is written before work starts and lists each line.

Does the indoor coil have to change too?

Often the answer is yes, and that decides the price. A new condenser has to match the indoor coil in capacity and refrigerant. Since 1 January 2025, new residential split AC systems are made with A2L refrigerants, so pairing a new outdoor unit with an old coil built for the previous refrigerant is not a given.

If the outdoor unit is on R-22, that refrigerant is no longer produced, and repairs depend on reclaimed supply. In that case a condenser swap on its own may make less sense than replacing the system. We check the data plate at the visit and give you both quotes so you decide with numbers.

Salt air and the new condenser

Salt air affects outdoor components on the coast, and a corroded condenser is often the reason for the call. For homes near the sand at Zuma Beach, Malibu Colony and Point Dume, we specify coastal-rated condensers, coated coils and protected line sets.

Placement matters as much as the coil. We look at where the unit sits relative to the wind and the surf, and whether it can move a few feet to a protected spot. HOA and coastal placement rules are checked before the condenser pad goes down.

Swap, repair or replace the system

Not every failed outdoor unit needs a new condenser. If the fault is a part, our AC repair service can price the repair next to the swap. If the whole system is tired or the house has no ducts, a ductless mini split is the third option.

Ask yourself one thing before you decide: do you want this outdoor unit to be the last one you pay for on this house? If the answer is yes, the full system quote deserves a close look next to the condenser quote. If you only need the house cool this season and the rest of the system is sound, the swap may be the right size of job.

We put the three quotes on the table: repair, condenser replacement and full system. That way you see what each path costs before you commit.

Permit and install day

Replacing an AC is permitted work in California, and in Malibu the city's building and safety division issues it. We book the permit and the inspection. Depending on the scope, Title 24 can require duct sealing and a duct leakage test by a third-party HERS rater who is not the installer.

On install day the crew removes the old unit, sets the new condenser on the pad, connects the line set and the electrical disconnect, charges the system and runs the startup. For the rest of the cooling work, see AC installation.

FAQ

How much does an AC condenser replacement cost in Malibu?

It depends on the unit size, the coil match, the line set and access. The job is quoted at the visit, in writing, before work starts.

Do I need a coastal-rated condenser?

If salt air reaches the unit, we specify a coated coil and a corrosion-resistant cabinet. The visit shows how exposed the unit is.

Can I replace only the condenser and keep my indoor unit?

Sometimes. The new condenser has to match the indoor coil, so we check the coil and the refrigerant before we quote.

Does a condenser swap need a permit?

Yes. Replacing an AC is permitted work in California, and we book it with the City of Malibu.

My AC runs on R-22. What now?

R-22 is no longer produced, so we price a full system alongside any repair and let you compare.
